Ujjain was known as Ujjaiyini, Avantika or Avantikapuri in ancient times.

Ujjain is an ancient city of Malwa region in central India, on the eastern bank of the Kshipra River, today part of the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Avanti kingdom with its capital at Ujjaini, is mentioned in Buddhist literature as one of the four great powers along with Vatsa, Kosala and Magadha.

Ujjain was the seat of the emperor Ashoka during the 2nd century BCE. It is one of the sites of the famous Hindu festival Kumbh Mela.

It emerged as the first major centre in the Malwa region during India’s second wave of urbanisation in the 7th century BC.

Ujjain was known as Ujjaiyini, Avantika or Avantikapuri in ancient times. It was the capital of Avanti Kingdom.
